Haven rushed through the corridor to her room, her hair—still wet from her bath—speckling the golden carpet runner with water.
Water. She would never look at it quite the same. Surai said Xandrian’s skills with water weren’t known, so he must have been hiding them. But to what end?
The sudden patter of nimble footfalls from behind made her whip around, her palm tingling with the promise of light magick.
Lysander stood a few feet away, the citrus and marine cologne he wore filling the narrow space. “Good day, Renfyre. Is there a place we can talk privately?”
Whatever he wanted, it was undoubtedly at the behest of the sovereign. Rolling her shoulders, she led him to her apartment. Demelza was busy sweeping the floor and humming loud enough that the entire courtyard below could probably hear her.
Waving off Demelza’s instant coddling, Haven dispatched her lady’s maid to gather more supplies for her horrible coffee.
Once they were alone, and Lysander had done a thorough sweep of the rooms to check, she settled on the arm of the couch.
“The sovereign wants to give you this, Renfyre.” He procured a tiny crystal vial a third full of an inky liquid. The stuff shimmered as if alive. A blown glass scorpion the same black color as the liquid topped the stopper. “Consider it a . . . gift.”
Her pulse raced, the moisture from her mouth drying out in seconds. “Poison?”
“Indeed.” Lysander stared at the vial with longing. “It’s called Godsbane. The last of its kind in all the realm.” His eyes were solemn as he handed the poison to her. “Take care it isn’t wasted. What you hold in your hands could buy a kingdom five times over.”
A tightness clenched her chest as she examined the glass vial, running her thumb over the multi-faceted surface. “I’ve never heard of this before.”
“That’s because it does not exist except in the books of old.”
The vial grew heavier in her hand, the poison inside whispering of ancient, evil tales of monsters and gods. Gritting her teeth, she set the poison down on the nearest side table. “Where did you get this?”
“Plundered from Odin’s treasures after his fall. It is said that he traded part of his horn for the potion, created by the Demon Lords of Neifgard from the venom of a giant scorpion.”
Haven’s breath caught. According to ancient myths, Neifgard was where Odin found his horde of demons to use in the Shadow War. It was one of the seven Realms of Other outside their own. Freya had come from Alfheim; Odin from Jotunheim.
Each realm housed gods of immense power, but wards kept them apart for the balance of each world.
Look at what happened when Freya and Odin found a way to enter Haven’s realm. Two new races appeared: the Noctis and the Solis. War and strife had followed, and Freya’s attempt to help the powerless mortals by gifting them magick caused a war that nearly consumed their world.
A sudden thought came to mind. “Is this the poison that felled Freya?”
Lysander’s eyes brightened.
